Determining how to encourage householders to participate in waste minimisation and recycling

Author: Zero Waste New York

Local Authorities in the United Kingdom have targets to reach for household recycling, they
were set by the Government in response to legislation. These targets are presenting a serious
challenge to Local Authorities as the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) arisings are increasing
annually. The key to increasing household recycling levels is to increase public participation,
however, the most effective way to reduce waste is to manage it at source by waste
minimisation.
